Counseling

The OSU Masters in Counseling program offers two options that lead to careers in counseling. The community counseling option is a 60-graduate-credit-hour program designed to meet the Oklahoma State licensure requirements for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). The Community Counseling option prepares students to provide a variety of counseling services to children, adolescents, and adults through agencies, nonprofit organizations, corporations and private practice. The Community Counseling Program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP, www.cacrep.org), making it the only nationally accredited program of its type in the State of Oklahoma.

The School Counseling option is a 57-graduate-credit-hour program designed to meet Oklahoma state certification for school counselors and is also the only CACREP accredited School Counseling program in the state. The School Counseling option prepares students to provide a variety of counseling services to children and adolescents in both public and private schools. It is not uncommon for our School Counseling students to take an additional course prior to graduation, which allows them the ability to seek LPC licensure in addition to their School Counseling certification.

Coursework and training for both options are offered on the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses. Students may take coursework at both campus locations. The program maintains full-time faculty as well as state-of-the-art counselor training centers on both campuses. Our program offers a variety of counseling training opportunities and experiences designed to provide excellent training for becoming a counselor in a variety of settings (e.g., college and university counseling centers, community mental health centers, hospitals, and public and private schools). The faculty strive to match training experiences to the interests and skills of students. The program offers numerous practica and internship settings for students to gain counseling experiences with diverse clients. At Oklahoma State University, we work hard to ensure that students' learning experiences combine both the support and challenge that they need to grow and learn.

The Student Handbook and Course Sequence both contain important program information that students need to be aware. If you are new to the program or a returning student and have questions about your Plan of Study, please feel free to contact your advisor. The materials in the handbooks can be downloaded and read using the Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you may download it here free of charge.
