Counseling Psychology
APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR 2011-12 ADMISSION IS DECEMBER 1, 2010.
Interviews will be on February 3, 4 or 5.
Dear Prospective Student!
I would like to introduce you to our doctoral program in counseling psychology at Oklahoma State University. Our Ph.D. program is accredited by the American Psychological Association and offers a variety of counseling psychology training opportunities and research experiences. I hope our program is a match for your interests and desired training experience.
I think you will find that our program provides excellent training for becoming a psychologist (Ph.D.) in a variety of settings (e.g., academia; university counseling centers; public service settings such as prisons, the military, or Veterans Administration Medical Centers; community mental health centers; hospitals; or private practice). We believe in matching training experiences to the interests and skills of our students. We offer a number of different practica settings for students to gain counseling experiences with clients. In addition, our faculty and students are involved in a variety of research teams that form based on mutual interests between faculty and students and in a variety of social justice and professional activities. At Oklahoma State University, we work hard to ensure that students' learning experiences combine both the support and challenge that they need to grow and learn.
Financial assistance is available for most prospective students in our doctoral program. We are able to provide out-of-state tuition waivers and graduate assistantships to many of our doctoral students, as well as in-state tuition wavers for some.
Students can enter our doctoral program with either a bachelor's degree or a master's degree. We typically admit three doctoral students a year who have bachelor's degrees and five students a year who have master's degree. Bachelor's track students can complete the doctoral program in 5 years (4 years of coursework and 1 year of internship). They will need to start coursework in the summer session. Master's track students can complete the doctoral program in 4 years (3 years of coursework and 1 year of internship). Students must complete a minimum of three years of study at Oklahoma State University and at least one-year must be in full-time residence. Since our program is full-time, most students are in residence at Oklahoma State University except for the internship year.
We are involved with a number of other important programs. We actively look for future students who are currently McNair Scholars at their undergraduate institutions; we have a lounge/study space for McNair Scholars in the School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology (SAHEP) of which the counseling psychology program is a part. We also have a McNair Research team. Another program that counseling psychology students can be a part of is the Preparing Future Faculty in Psychology (PFF) program. The PFF in Psychology program is a geared toward preparing psychology doctoral students for a career in academia. Students must apply after their first year of post-masters’ study to this special program to be accepted. Typically, one or two doctoral students in counseling psychology are accepted as PFF Fellows each year. PFF Fellows attend monthly seminars and receive mentorship by OSU faculty as well as faculty from partnering institutions across the state of Oklahoma. The American Indians into Psychology (AIIP) program, housed in the Department of Psychology, is paid by a grant from Indian Health Services to train American Indian/Native American people to become doctoral level psychologists. You can apply for participation in the AIIP summer mentorship program as a undergraduate to find out whether or not you are interested in psychology as a graduate career. In recent years, a number of our counseling psychology students have been selected to be part of the American Psychological Association’s Minority Fellowship Program; others have been selected as Carl Albert Public Service Interns here in Oklahoma. There is also the possibility for Counseling Psychology students to be selected as a Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Scholar, a program out of Oklahoma State University’s School of Business.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or comments about our Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program. If you'd like to speak to current students in our program, I would be very happy to arrange that for you. Just let me know at
