Curriculum Studies Project
The Curriculum Studies Project brings together faculty, students, and other curriculum leaders to address critical educational issues for the advancement of curriculum studies at the state, national, and international levels, to enhance the graduate program of teaching and curriculum leadership, and to provide leadership for university and local educational initiatives.
Embracing creative theory/practice dynamics, the Curriculum Studies Project is committed to curriculum theorizing, curriculum development, education for social equality and equity, intercultural and international dialogue, and school-based initiatives such as teacher research, analysis of teaching and learning, critical media literacy, and professional development. Curriculum studies as a field of study with its own distinctive history, conceptions, and modes of inquiry addresses fundamental issues across all content areas at all educational levels, and promotes the interdisciplinary cross-fertilization for fresh ideas.
The Curriculum Studies Project sponsors a distinguished lectureship annually featuring internationally renowned curriculum scholars, engages collaborative research projects with local communities and public schools, distributes scholarship through journals and publications, and promotes dialogues between faculty and students. All these events provide opportunities for educators to become strong curriculum leaders whose daily educational work in and out of the classroom impacts public conversations on the significance of education for individual and social transformation.

AERA¹s Division B-Curriculum Studies Lifetime Achievement Award and a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association
2012, Dr. William F. Pinar: “Allegories of the Present: Curriculum Development in a Culture of Narcissism and Presentism”
Dr. Pinar teaches Curriculum Theory at the University of British Columbia as Canada Research Chair. A recipient of the AERA Lifetime Achievement Award, he has founded several influential scholarly journals, conferences, and associations around the globe.
2009, Elizabeth Thoman: 'Miracle in Room 33': How Media Literacy Transformed Itself from a Laughingstock to an 'Essential Skill' for 21st Century Education
Elizabeth Thoman founded the Center for Media Literacy in 1989 and is the co-founder and current board member of the National Association for Media Library Education (NAMLE).
2008, Dr. Lisa Cary: "Curriculum Spaces: Reclaiming Research in Education"
Dr. Cary is Associate Professor of Curriculum Studies in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at University of Texas, Austin.
2007, Dr. Wesley Null: "Curriculum for Teachers: What is and Why It Matters"
Dr. Wesley Null with OSU Curriculum Studies Faculty
Dr. Null is Associate Professor of Curriculum and Foundations of Education at Baylor University.
2006, Dr. Bill Doll: "Teaching Good: An Alternative to Good Teaching"
Dr. Doll is Professor of Curriculum Theory in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Louisiana State University.
2005, Dr. Bill Pinar: "Study, Not Teaching: shifting the Site of Education"
Dr. Pinar is a Professor and the Canada Research Chair in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy at the University of British Columbia and Directore of the Centre for the Study of Internationalization of Curriculum Studies.

Teacher Research Initiatives
Kathryn Castle collaborates with public school teacher researchers on teacher research projects including:
- Children's Mathematical Thinking
- Children's Understanding of Measurement
- Boys’ Reading and Writing Preferences
Kathryn Castle has established and chairs the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators' Researchnet on Teacher Research and was Guest Editor for the Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education (JECTE) theme issue on Teacher Research and serves on the Steering Committee for NAEYC and Voices of Practitioners.
Multicultural Education Project
Hongyu Wang co-edited a collection of OSU students' writings, A Journey to Unlearn and Learn in Multicultural Education (Peter Lang, 2009), which foregrounds learner's own perspectives through a process-oriented and dialogical approach. It demonstrates students' journeys of cultivating multicultural understanding, awareness, and commitment, and depicts their own moments of awakening during the process, not only speaking directly to other students but also informing teacher educator's multicultural pedagogical theory and practice. Transforming teachers' subjectivity is essential to bringing multicultural orientations into the classroom. Sonia Nieto writes about the book, “It will encourage both teachers and teacher educators to have courage in their journey of multicultural understanding and sociopolitical awareness.”
Curriculum Studies Workshops for Professional Development
1. Teacher Research and Professional Learning Communities: (2 sessions-1.5 hrs. each)
Teacher research has great potential to transform the classroom and promote professional learning communities. This workshop will explain teacher research, give examples, and give tools for doing it in PK-12 schools; teachers will leave ready to start their own research!

2. Media Literacy and Differentiated Learning across the Curriculum: (2 sessions-1.5 hrs. each)
Media literacy, the ability to analyze, evaluate, and create communications in a variety of media, can also engage diverse learners. This workshop explains media literacy, gives examples across the secondary (grades 7-12) curriculum, and offers tools from graphic novels to YouTube. Teachers will leave with a host of resources to infuse in their curriculum areas, meeting PASS objectives.

3. Honoring Diversity in the Classroom
The student population is changing and schools must be tuned in to new and diverse student needs. This workshop describes multicultural education, promotes teachers' self-understanding and understanding of students in their different backgrounds at all grade levels. Teachers will leave with renewed commitment to inclusive education and with ideas about how to integrate diversity into the curriculum.

4. Education and the Aesthetic Experience (2 sessions, 1.5 hrs. each)
As schools become immersed in testing and tabulation, it is essential for educators to support the arts and aesthetics in order to foster well-rounded students who will become caring adults. Through these professional development experiences, participating teachers will gain practical ways to incorporate aesthetic experiences into today’s classrooms.
