Course Work

  • All listed courses are 3 credit hours each.
  • 60 credit hours – Mental Health Option
  • 57 credit hours – School Counseling Option
  • 9 hours can be transferred from other recognized graduate programs
  • Last 8 hours – must be taken at OSU
  • 24 credit hours – 5000 level courses or above (4000 level courses are not approved)
  • 3.00 or above required in all academic coursework

Practicum & Internship

  • Practicum
    • Summer of 2nd or 3rd year of program
    • Required to work at an approved site
    • 100 hours across the semester (40 – direct, 60 – indirect)
    • Students will be assigned a doctoral student supervisor  (1 hour/week)
    • Note to School Counseling Students:
      • Practicum does not have to be in a school setting
      • Should involve working with children or adolescents
      • OSBI check for Practicum and Internship
  • Internship
    • Fall and Spring of 2nd or 3rd year of program
    • Required to work at an approved site
    • 100 hours across the semester (40 – direct, 60 – indirect)
    • Students will be assigned a doctoral student supervisor  (1 hour/week)
    • Note to School Counseling Students:
      • Practicum does not have to be in a school setting

Thesis

  • School Counseling Option – additional 6 hours added to Plan of Study

Research Experiences

  • Students are encouraged to begin participating in research activities early in their programs
  • Students initially become involved in research by joining research teams
  • Research teams
    • Consist of one or more faculty
    • Top of interest to group as a whole
