Graduate Certificate for Effective Teaching in Secondary Schools

The Graduate Certificate for Effective Teaching in Secondary Schools is housed in the School of Teaching, Learning & Educational Sciences in the College of Education, Health & Aviation. The certificate supports alternatively-certified practicing teachers who were not traditionally prepared through an accredited institution or teacher preparation program and provides alternatively-certified teachers the series of professional development coursework in order to transition the temporary license to a permanent license. This 12-hour graduate certificate, available solely online, is available for secondary teachers of Agriculture, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.  Successful completion of the online certificate program includes taking 12 credit hours graduate courses (4 courses).  These credit hours are transferable to the both the MS degrees in EMS K-12 Education.

Admission requirements:

  • OSU Graduate application,
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A current alternative or emergency teaching certificate
  • Statement of Goals
  • Resume
  • Completion of the Graduate Certificate for Effective Teaching in Secondary Schools requires completion of the course work in good standing (GPA of B, or 3.0).

Online Coursework:

Four graduate courses (12 credit hours) are required for the Graduate Certificate: 

Required Courses:

  • CIED 5333 Effective Classroom Management for Secondary Schools (Fall, 8 week course) 
  • CIED 5363 Effective Teaching Strategies for Teaching in the 6-12 Classroom (Fall, 8 week course)
  • CIED 5010 Practicum for Early Career Secondary Teachers (Fall 1 hr, Spring 2 hr)

 Choice of one methods course from the following options (Spring 3 hr):

  • CIED 5403 Teaching and Learning in the Secondary Schools: English/Language Arts Methods
  • CIED 5413 Teaching and Learning in the Secondary Schools: Social Studies
  • SMED 5153 Methods for Teaching Secondary Mathematics
  • SMED 5143 Methods for Teaching Secondary Science
  • AGED 5823 Advanced Methods of Teaching Agriculture
