The mission of the Joint Center for Student Affairs Research and Professional Practice (JCSARPP) is to promote international collaboration that advances both research and practice in the field of student affairs. JCSARPP was launched in November 2017 at two universities, Oklahoma State University (OSU) and the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). The Center was created as a collaboration between three parties within these universities: (1) the Higher Education and Student Affairs program at OSU, (2) the Division of Student Affairs at OSU, and (3) the University of Science and Technology Beijing. JSCARPP was the first joint academic center established anywhere in the world to promote student affairs research and best practices.

The Functions of the Center
- Conduct collaborative scholarly research in higher education administration and student affairs
- Serve as the hub for organizing international internships for graduate students in College Student Development
- Serve as the host for the annual International Symposium on Student Affairs
- Host visiting scholars in the field of student affairs or university administration
- Provide workshops and seminars on international education in China
- Offer study abroad courses to examine student affairs and college student development in other cultures.
Joint Center Research Fellow Program
The Joint Center’s Research Fellow program provides residential fellowships to individual visiting scholars in the field of student affairs. The program offers research and professional development opportunities through the interaction with OSU faculty and staff in the College of Education and Human Sciences and the OSU Division of Student Affairs. The program also features a mentorship program that pairs the individual visiting scholar with a faculty member in the College of Education and Human Sciences or a senior administrator in the Division of Student Affairs.
The visiting scholar program is three to six months in length. To be eligible, candidates must be in a Ph.D. program or have received the Ph.D. degree in the field of Education, Higher Education or Student Affairs. Extensive professional experience in the field of student affairs is also required.
Current and Past Research Fellows
- Yijing Wang, Fudan University, December 2018 – June 2019
Ms. Wang is a doctoral candidate at Fudan University. She received her Master’s degree in Journalism from Fudan University and double bachelor degrees from Fudan University and Waseda University. Currently, she works as a senior staff of student affairs at Fudan University. With great passion for student affairs, Ms. Wang also worked as an assistant researcher in campus planning & policy research and a manager of volunteer affairs in the media center for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
Area of Focus: leadership development, professional development of student affairs staff
- Jue Wang, Fudan University, October 2017 – April 2018
Mr. Wang is a doctoral candidate at Fudan University. He graduated from Fudan University with both his bachelor and Master’s degree. In 2017 his position was the Chief of Graduate Student Affairs in the Department of Material Sciences. He was selected by Fudan University to be the second Visiting Scholar at OSU and was fully funded by the Chinese Scholarship Council. During his 8 years as a student affairs professional at Fudan University, he has worked in various student affairs functions such as campus life, residential life, volunteer services, and university organization department. Throughout his career, he has received many top awards in Fudan University and was named a “top ten” student affairs advisor at Fudan.

- Yan Xu, Fudan University, December 2016 – June 2017
Ms. Yan Xu is a doctoral candidate at Fudan University. Ms. Xu received her Master’s degrees from Fudan University and her bachelor degree from East China Normal University. Before Ms. Xu visited OSU, she worked as a student affairs advisor in Career Development Office at Fudan University. In 2016, she was selected by Fudan University to be the first Visiting Scholar at OSU and was fully funded by the Chinese Scholarship Council.

- Xueying Hou, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), January 2015 – January 2016
Ms. Hou is a doctoral candidate at Sun Yat-sen University. She graduated from Sun Yat-Sen University with her bachelor degree in Ecology and Master’s degree in Business Administration. With the great passion of engaging in the students affairs work, she currently serves as the student affairs advisor for the School of Software.
Area of Focus: new student orientation and career advising
- Jieying Liu, Sun Yat-sen University, January 2015 – January 2016
Ms. Liu received her Ph.D. from South China Normal University. She graduated from Sun Yat-Sen University with both her bachelor and Master’s degree. Ms. Liu’s interest in campus engagement led her to choose students affairs as her career in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Sun Yat-Sen University. Her current position is Deputy Director of Student Affairs at Sun Yat-sen University.

- Yunzhi Pan, Sun Yat-sen University, January 2015 -- January 2016
Mr. Pan graduated from Sun Yat-Sen University with a bachelor degree in chemistry and a Master’s degree in polymer chemistry and physics. He held multiple positions in the field of student affairs, including the Section Member of the Administration Office of Sun Yat-Sen University, the Deputy Section Chief of the Coordination Section of Student Affairs Office, and the Section Chief of the Student Loan Section of Student Affairs Office. He is currently the Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the School of Marine Sciences.

- Bojun Yu, Sun Yat-sen University, January 2015 – January 2016
Mr. Yu is a doctoral candidate at Sun Yat-sen University. He graduated from Sun Yat-Sen University with both his bachelor degree in Computer Science and Technology and a Master’s degree in Educational Economy and Management. While pursuing his Master’s degree, Mr. Yu started his student affairs career at Sun Yat-Sen University as a staff member. After finishing his Master’s degree, he continued his career as a Senior Advisor in the School of Mathematical and Computational Science from May 2008 to December 2012, and then Director of Youth League Committee since May 2012.

Global Perspectives on Higher Education Student Affairs Lecture Series
The Global Perspectives on Higher Education and Student Affairs Series brings international scholars and senior practitioners to OSU. The series promotes understanding of the student affairs profession within the global context.

The Joint Center develops and identifies internship opportunities for College Student Development program students in international locations. The Joint Center supports interested students as they both apply for student affairs internship positions abroad and identify funding opportunities.

International Symposium on Student Affairs
The OSU International Symposium on Student Affairs is designed to provide Chinese Higher Education senior administrators and student affairs practitioners an opportunity to participate in lectures, discussions, and small group tours. This one-week program focuses on the American model of Student Affairs in higher education. College student development theories and practices are examined, with an emphasis on using theory to guide programs and services. The inaugural program was offered in 2009. Since then, more than 300 Chinese senior student affairs professionals from over 40 Chinese institutions have attended the program. In June 2018, the program celebrated its 10th anniversary.
