International Perspectives in Literacy Education
EDUC 3080.616 & CIED 6060.606
Spring 2018

In this international service-learning course, Oklahoma State University students who are studying in various education-related programs work with Belizean teachers and children to develop knowledge of effective literacy practices.  Our main goals are to collaborate and co-teach with the Belizean teachers, to provide professional development in literacy instruction for all participants, and to learn about the Belizean education system and culture from the teachers and students with whom we interact.  OSU students spend one week in a Belizean primary grades classroom (equivalent to US grades K-8) working with the teacher to implement “best practices” in literacy education.  The lessons are designed to be model lessons that teachers can build upon in the future.  OSU students also lead a poetry writing club for children after school.  The professor, along with any doctoral students who participate in the course, provide additional professional development for the Belizean teachers in areas of need, as determined by the school teachers and principal.
