Play Therapy Current Projects
The effectiveness of individual and small group play therapy with African American children living in poverty. Data has been collected and is currently being analyzed for this project. Children participated in six weeks of child-centered individual play therapy followed by six weeks of group play therapy. The assessments used in this research project included the Impaired Rating Scale for teachers and the Spence Anxiety Scale.
Exploring gender and cultural norms in play therapy. We are currently collecting data for this project. Introductory play therapy sessions with counselors-in-training (CIT) are being reviewed and analyzed by our research team. In these sessions we are examining how children and the CITs identify gender and culture in the playroom.
Training play therapists: The differences between online and traditional classroom education. We are currently collecting data for this project. Students enrolled in traditional and online introduction to play therapy courses are the participants for this study. Our team is collecting data on students’ perceived competencies of play therapy before and after the introduction to play therapy course. We are also comparing final exam scores to see if there is a difference in outcomes for students trained in play therapy online versus the traditional classroom setting.
Reality Play Therapy: A case example. Dr. Stutey is collaborating with Dr. Robert Wubbolding to integrate Reality Therapy with Play Therapy. In this manuscript we are taking the core techniques of each of these theories and illustrating how play therapists can utilize a Reality Choice Play Therapy (RCPT) framework when working with children. Future research might include implementing RCPT with children in the school or community setting and examining the effectiveness of this treatment.
Examining the effectiveness of play therapy with children in foster care. We have IRB approval to begin data collection for this study. We are collaborating with Payne County Youth Services to deliver play therapy services with children in foster care. We will administer the Behavior Assessment Scale for Children and Parental Stress Index pre and post play therapy treatment. A grant has been submitted with the American Psychological Foundation to support this project.
Traditional play therapy versus nature-based play therapy with children in Kenya. We are currently seeking funding for a project that would begin August 2018. Our team would travel to a K-8 school in Kenya at the request of the Bloom Where You Are Planted foundation. During our time in Kenya we plan to conduct small play therapy groups and train school personnel on play therapy skills. One of the groups will be traditional, non-directive play therapy and the other will be nature-based play therapy.
