EDUCATOR SPOTLIGHT: Brenda Medlock
Kiowa County is the heart of Southwest Oklahoma where Hobart is the county seat. Brenda has been an educator in Kiowa County for 13 years also serving half time in Greer County in 2003 and 2004.
Brenda had many influences as a youth living on a farm in Washita County that helped her decide to become an Extension educator. She was involved in 4-H and had a wonderful Family Consumer Science teacher that inspired her love for the career. “I remember thinking the career sounded both rewarding and challenging.” I loved the idea of working in the areas of Family and Consumer Sciences and teaching both youth and adults.”
Brenda has certification as a Child Passenger Safety Technician and has helped parents and families install car seats correctly at the office and at Car Seat Events for over 13 years. Brenda is one of the few certified educators in the district.
She also has received the certification to provide instruction through the Arthritis Foundation for the Exercise Program and has provided this program to Kiowa County residents since 2011. With her guidance there is an ongoing class at the career tech in Hobart.
She is actively involved in the local Kiowa County Community Coalition to address key issues in the areas of health in Kiowa County. She has partnered with the agencies and individuals within the coalition to provide health fairs, grants, parenting classes, nutrition and cooking classes, community forums on underage drinking, and exercise classes.
Since 2001 Brenda has also been responsible for the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day which provides a safety day event every year to all the fourth grade students in Kiowa County.
As you can tell Brenda’s passion in programming efforts have been health and safety which are issues that are very much needed in Kiowa County.
