Nancy Self

Extension Educator, FCS/4-H/CED

I am in the beginning of my fourth year with cooperative extension. However, I am no stranger to Family and Consumer Sciences. Coming from a family of Family and Consumer Science teachers, I am the youngest of four children. My two sisters, and I all have  Family and Consumer Science Degrees.  I taught in the comprehensive high school for many years, and decided that I could make a difference with adults as well as children. That is why I chose extension.  I believe it is one of the most rewarding careers a person could have in this day and time.


People ask me what I do. I tell them that I wear many hats. If they have a little time, I can tell them about one of the hats that I wear.  In extension we are responsible for three issue teams. My issue teams are Family Breakdown, Finance, and Health. Most of my programing is centered around my issue teams. Family Breakdown is utilized with the Co-Parenting for Resilience program that is state mandated. It is for all married couples that are getting divorced that have under aged children. My next issue team is Finance, in which I teach several programs about estate planning, career planning, and budgeting. The last issue team that I am responsible for is Health. I go through a program called Journey through Health with elderly residents each month. Also, Arthritis exercise is completed through several genres in the county.

Another hat that I wear is working as a team.  Teamwork is very important in our county. I work closely with our 4-H educator and our Agriculture educator on several programs. We are very fortunate to have CNEP in our county and we have worked on several activities. Their mission is aligned with mine to teach healthy eating habits.  One of the most important hats that I wear is a being an example for our county and our state. It is important that we practice what we teach and allow our community to see what extension is all about. I am passionate about what I do, I love working with the elderly and I feel I have the patients for it. There is no repetition in my line of work, every day is different.  A job like mine is something that a person never dreads going to.
