Oklahoma Reading Test Requirement
Who is Required to Take the Test?
Elementary Education, Early Childhood, and Special Education candidates who are scheduled to graduate after July 2010.
What is the Oklahoma Reading Test?
In 2010 the Oklahoma Legislature passed House Bill 1581, which mandated the teaching of the five essential elements of reading to elementary education, early childhood, and special education candidates. In responding to the law, Oklahoma reading faculty developed a reading test that assesses the five essential elements of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Why Another Test?
The purpose of the Oklahoma Reading Test is to help ensure that all candidates seeking certification in Oklahoma have the knowledge and skills of reading necessary to perform the job of an entry-level educator in Oklahoma public schools.
How Should I Prepare for the Test?
Content in your course work will prepare you for the test, but as a review, we have prepared an online study guide.

How much does it cost?
The test is free, as are any necessary retakes. It is currently administered online. Be sure to bring a valid photo ID with you when you take the test.
What if I don't pass?
If you don't pass the test the first time, you can take it again that semester during the retake session. If you don't pass the retake, you will receive an Incomplete in the course associated with the exam and have to retake the exam the following semester. You have up to one year to pass the exam and get the Incomplete changed to your course grade. When you pass the retake, it is your responsibility to notify your instructor so that he/she can submit a grade change form to remove the Incomplete and assign the appropriate course grade.
