M.S. Degree

  • The M.S. Degree requires a minimum of 36 credit hours, which can be completed under two options: 36 hours of course work plus a creative component or 30 hours of course work, six thesis hours, and a thesis defense. The student’s advisory committee may recommend additional course work or thesis hours. 
  • Degree Requirements
    • 21 hours of REMS courses
    • 6 hours of educational psychology courses
    • 3 hours of REMS elective courses
    • Completion of a comprehensive examination that covers the content from the core courses
    • 6 thesis hours and completion of a thesis or 6 hours of elective courses approved by the advisory committee under the non-thesis option and completion of a creative component

Ph.D. Degree

  • The Ph.D. requires a university-determined minimum of 60 hours beyond the master’s degree or a minimum of 90 hours beyond the bachelor’s degree. 
  • Degree Requirements
    • 21 hours of core REMS courses
    • 9 hours of educational psychology courses,
    • 12 hours of advanced REMS courses (e.g. psychometric theory, structural equation modeling, item response theory, hierarchical linear modeling, nonparametric methods, etc.)
    • 9 hours in a cognate area defined by the student and committee chair (e.g. student development and higher education, mathematical statistics, computer science, institutional research, measurement and cognitive psychology, etc.)
    • Completion of a comprehensive examination that covers the content from the core courses
    • 15 dissertation hours, a completed dissertation, and successful dissertation defense
    • Two applied experiences (e.g. development and evaluation of an instructional unit, development and submission of a grant proposal, design and conduct an evaluation of a program, presentation of original research at a regional or national meeting, etc.)
