What is sports and coaching science?

This major prepares students for careers in athletic coaching and ancillary fields, equipping them for certification via various sports organizations relevant to their athletic area of interest.

Why sports and coaching science at OSU?

The program provides students the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including professional, collegiate or secondary school sport organizations as well elite training facilities, athletic league officiating or small businesses.

Career Paths

Graduates can work with high performance sports and intramurals as well as hold roles in administration and facilities management. Those who pursue additional graduate education may find careers in sport psychology, athletic training, strength and conditioning, collegiate coaching and sports management.

 Internships

Students are expected to gain professional experience outside the classroom and they are required to participate in an internship. Typically, the internship experience will occur during the end of the degree program and be part of a summer semester. Possible internship sites include:

  • National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Performance Center
  • U.S. Olympic Training Center (Colorado Springs, Colorado)
  • High school, collegiate, semi-professional and professional sports organizations

Gold Medal Instruction

Students have the opportunity to learn from legendary Coach John Smith, ​OSU head wrestling coach and two-time Olympic gold medalist. Smith teaches the elective course, "Building and Sustaining a Successful Sports Program." ​
