Recreation Management Overview

There is a tremendous and ever-increasing demand for educated professionals who have the ability to guide others toward personal and family enrichment by means of lifetime leisure and recreational pursuits. The field of leisure is growing—especially its need for professionals in both the public and private sectors— as this multi-billion dollar industry continues to expand each year.

Career Opportunities

The recreation management option leads to a bachelor of science degree and prepares graduates for careers that serve the recreational needs of both adults and children. Graduates work in a wide variety of settings including, but not limited to:

  • Corporate recreation and intramurals
  • University recreation and intramurals
  • Public park and recreation agencies
  • Military recreation
  • YMCA’s
  • Golf and tennis clubs
  • Theme parks
  • Ski resorts
  • Fitness centers
  • Youth camps

Experience Opportunities

Recreation management majors must complete at least two work experiences in which they explore different professional environments. In the past, students have completed internships at:

  • Oklahoma City Park and Recreation
  • Red Rock Event Center, Colorado
  • Outdoor Adventure with OSU
  • Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan
  • Pelican Bay Resort, Florida
  • First Baptist Church of Moore, Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma City Dodgers
  • BOK Center, Oklahoma
  • YMCA of Tulsa, Oklahoma
  • Campus Recreation and Intramurals with OSU
  • OSU Athletics
  • Kanakuk Camps
  • Camp War Eagle
  • Cox Machinery – Recreation and Wellness Center
  • Walt Disney World


Last year more than $250,000 in scholarships were awarded to students in the College of Education and Human Sciences. In addition to endowed scholarships from the college, students are sometimes awarded scholarships from state or national professional organizations.
