Celebrating 100 Years

In 2024, the Cleo L. Craig Child Development Lab will mark its 100th anniversary at Oklahoma State University! 

 

As the second oldest land-grant university-based child development lab in the nation, the CDL has served the Stillwater community in various iterations since it first opened as a nursery school in 1924.

    Promoting Competence in Young Children

    Tracy Spinrad, Ph.D., Arizona State University

     

    Dr. Tracy L. Spinrad, a Professor in the T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University, will be discussing the importance of children’s emotional competence for later success. Her research focuses on the development and socialization of emotion regulation and moral development in young children.

Virginia Messenger Stapley served on the faculty of the Division of Home Economics from 1926 to 1963. Shown with her first nursery school class, she provided strong leadership to assure the growth and development of the nursery school program. Later, as department head, she encouraged the adoption of many family programs.Library archives

Following World War II, married veterans flocked to Oklahoma A&M. to take advantage of the GI Bill. Often residing in Veteran’s Village—a small town with a teeming population of children—these young couples needed nursery school facilities. In time, both half- and all-day schools opened.Library archives

“Why’s everyone looking at me? I’m being good!” In many FRCD classes, it is important to observe and work with children. Leone List, the head of the Child Development Laboratories from 1966 to 1985, brings a “guest” to class.Library archives

In the mid-1980s, FRCD received some IBM PC Juniors. These budding computer whizzes affirm “Patty Computer” is a friend to the user. A program in the Child Development Laboratories, this innovative project seeks to encourage mastery of the machine as well as to elicit positive feelings toward computers.Library archives

In the early 1920s, Oklahoma A. and M. became the second land-grant college to have a nursery school. As part of a cooperative effort with the Stillwater Junior High School, the college allowed these teenagers to watch the group of preschoolers at play. From the intense expressions on these young women’s faces as well as their copious notes, it seems this observation experience has been most informative.Library archives
