Textiles and Apparel Science Laboratory
Textile Research
for performance, durability and comfort
Welcome to TASL – the Department of Design and Merchandising’s Textiles and Apparel
Science Laboratory at OSU.
TASL houses state-of-the-art technology and lab equipment that is utilized to test
and research the physical and chemical properties of textiles, polymer materials and
apparel to assess their serviceability. As a teaching and research-based laboratory,
TASL investigates various topics from the fundamentals of garment quality to the advanced
properties of polymers. The Textiles and Apparel Science Laboratory educates and trains
approximately 200 undergraduate and graduate students each academic year.
Essential Research
to inform textile and apparel design
Designers, manufacturers and consumers rely on accurate information so that the textiles
perform as they should, which includes ensuring the fabric can be washed or confirming
it has the thermal properties to keep wearers safe. Textile comfort is an essential
piece of research when developing new concepts or designs in the field of textiles
and apparel.
