Lela O’Toole International Speaker Series

Dr. Lela O'Toole

 

The Dean Lela O’Toole International Speaker Series was established by the former College of Human Sciences in 1995. It focuses on timely and relevant topics related to public policy, ethics, and international issues in the scholastic areas of the college. Lela O’Toole served as dean of the College of Human Sciences from 1951-1975. She believed that universities play an important role in the conduct of international and world affairs.

This event will focus on panel discussion, interactive activities, poster presentations and keynote speaker. The focus this year will be on UN Sustainable Goals of Quality Education, Gender Equality and Zero Hunger. Faculty, staff and students from all backgrounds are encouraged to attend the following events. See tentative schedule below. Hosted by College Education & Human Sciences & Community.

    Theme: Quality Education

    Title: Implementation of AI

    Presenters: Renee Venegas, Khan Academy; Mark Jamison, Khan Academy; Evan Rahman, Khan Academy; Vol Woods, Superintendent of Keys Public School; Steven Goss, High School Principal and Athletic Director of Keys Public School; Stephanie Garis- Math Department Head and Teacher of Enid Public Schools; Tyler Elders- Instructional Coach for Math Department of Enid Public Schools; Kendon Mulanax- Assistant Principal, Math Department Administrator of Enid Public Schools; Shannon Crowley- Secondary Curriculum Director of Enid Public Schools (Facilitated by Dr. Kathy Curry and Dr. Jentre Olsen)

    Details: This session will provide important insight from district, building, and classroom leaders who have implemented the artificial intelligence platform, Khanmigo, in math classes in their districts. These leaders will share their experiences with AI including their vision for AI use, opportunities provided by AI, as well as challenges they have faced. Khan Academy representatives will provide insight about goals and possibilities of AI for transforming education in K-12 schools and the types of data and resources provided through AI that can enhance student learning and support teacher success.

    Title: Narratives of Care: A Conversation of Caregiving Across the Lifespan

    Details: Panelists will discuss topics including elder and end-of-life care; observing rites of passage as a caregiver; supporting caregiving students; building supportive communities; and advocating for yourself and others. Community and campus resources will be provided.

    Title: Understanding AI for Students and Faculty

    Presenters: Tutaleni I. Asino, Jennifer Lu, Susan Stansberry, Penny Thompson

    Details: Join us for a workshop that breaks down Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a way that's easy to grasp for both students and faculty. We'll start by covering the basics – what AI is, how it works, why it matters in different academic fields, and how to get the most out of it by crafting effective prompts.

    Focusing specifically on the tools that are used for academic work, such as writing, this workshop will be hands-on. Expect interactive discussions and demos to help you see how AI tools are being used and how they can make a difference in classrooms and research projects. We recommend bringing a laptop, tablet, or smartphone to participate in workshop activities.

    Don't miss out on this chance to demystify AI and discover how it's woven into everyday academic life. Join us for an engaging workshop that makes AI approachable and applicable for everyone.

    Title: Convergence of Body Image and Gender

    Presenters: Bailey Counterman, Kimmie Osborn, Elsie Schafer, and Emily Rieken

    Details: This presentation delves into the nuanced world of body image in trans and gender nonconforming (GNC) individuals and cisgender men. We'll explore societal influences, mental health implications, and unique challenges faced by trans and GNC individuals in their quest for self-acceptance. Simultaneously, we'll spotlight evolving narratives and societal pressures shaping body image in cisgender men, challenging stereotypes. This brief but impactful session aims to foster understanding and empathy while considering intersectional factors like race and culture in these diverse body image experiences.

    Title: Tour of OSU Student Farm

    Presenters: Justin Moss

    Details: The OSU Student Farm is a project to rebuild the land with a mission to feed the community in a sustainable way and provide access to produce including broccoli, spinach, lettuce, onions and more. The Student Farm also utilizes buried irrigation to prevent water waste.

    Title: Navigating the Obstacles and Opportunities of AI in Early Childhood Education

    Presenters: Jennifer Stepp, Amanda McCade and Chole Morris

    Details: We will explore the integration of AI in early childhood education classrooms through various resources, examining its role in enhancing lesson planning, facilitating communication with families, and engaging students in the classroom.  We will advocate for a balanced, developmentally appropriate approach to integrating AI and related technology into the classroom.

    Title: Escape the Ordinary: AI Tools for Immersive Digital Adventures  

    Presenters: Heather Anderson

    Details: What do you get when you combine purposeful educational technology with AI and add a sprinkle of Shakespeare? Bring your best Shakespearean accent to this interactive presentation as we explore how the fusion of gamification and AI can captivate and immerse students, igniting their curiosity at any grade level and with any content. During this session, I will showcase how educators can create interactive online escape adventures that harness the potential of AI generated images, Genially's robust escape room templates, and much more. Please bring a personal device (laptops preferred) to participate in this interactive session.

    Title: Affirmation Across the Lifespan: Inclusive Scholarship and Practice to Improve Health

    Presenters: Dannie Klooster: CNM - TGD Poly Families; Bek Urban: Affirmative Parenting for TGD Youth with ED Concerns; Jules Soper and Sam Jensen: Community Building/Support in TGD Care; Laina Nelson: Sport & Accomplices for TGD Athletes; Savannah Fissenden and Kacey Monagas: Mindfulness Interventions for ED in TGD Populations; Karissa Jensen: Graduate Education for TGD Students.

    Details: In this symposium, Health, Education, and Rural Empowerment (HEaRE) lab researchers present their scholarship related to health promotion for gender diverse people at various developmental stages and in a variety of settings. The presenters pose the question, "What does gender affirmation look like across key contexts and developmental milestones?" Paper topics include perspectives on gender-affirming parenting, families, education, sport, clinical care, and social connections.
