Supporting Faculty, Staff, and Students with Disabilities: Dr. Jay Dolmage

 

Dr. Jay Dolmage, Professor and Chair of English at the University of Waterloo, Ontario Canada, will present on "Supporting Faculty, Staff, and Students with Disabilities." Drawing from his expertise in rhetoric, writing, disability studies, and justice-oriented pedagogy, Dr. Dolmage will explore the intersectional tensions (discursive and material), discursive and material impacting the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in higher education. As the founding editor of the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies and author of three books on disability rhetoric and academic ableism, Dr. Dolmage will guide participants in critiquing and examining language, practices, and institutional biases that perpetuate disability discrimination. His presentation aims to inspire institutions to engage in the imaginative work of creating supportive environments that promote access and opportunity for all university stakeholders, reflecting his commitment to disability rights in scholarship, service, and teaching.

Additional Information: Dr. Dolmage is the founding editor of the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies and has authored influential books, including but not limited to Disability Rhetoric (2014) and Academic Ableism: Disability and Higher Education (2017).

Dialogues4Change (D4C)

 

Dialogues4Change (D4C), an approach to community transformation developed by Everyday Democracy, has been utilized for over 30 years across various US communities and organizations. This framework emphasizes small-group facilitated dialogues at the heart of community decision-making, fostering constructive and respectful conversations among diverse individuals around public concerns. Dialogue4Change Coordinator, Melissa Echols, in conjunction with special guest, Dr. Jay Dolmage, will utilize this methodology to align with this year’s theme, Supporting Faculty, Staff, and Students with Disabilities. Dolmage, a prominent advocate for disability rights, integrates rhetoric, writing, disability studies, and critical pedagogy in his work. He is the founding editor of the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies and has authored influential books, including but not limited to Disability Rhetoric (2014) and Academic Ableism: Disability and Higher Education (2017).

CEHS Faculty Showcase

 

In this session, CEHS faculty will present their research, programs, initiatives, and centers related to disability studies, followed by a Q&A with Dr. Jay Dolmage and the audience.

 

  • Kami L. Gallus, PhD, LMFT, a Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science and Associate Director of the OSU Center for Developmental Disabilities (OSUCDD), co-founded OSUCDD in January 2020 with Dr. Jennifer Jones. OSUCDD promotes the belief that disability is a natural part of human diversity and emphasizes inclusion through education, research and community engagement, aiming to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • DJ McMaughan, PhD is an Associate Professor of Public Health at Oklahoma State University who focuses on improving systems through a disability studies lens. They lead the Disability and Wellness Research Collective, which addresses health, wellbeing, and equity at the intersection of disability, neurodivergence, gender diversity and sexual identity.
  • Emily Tucker, PhD, an assistant professor of professional practice at Oklahoma State University, serves as the program director for the Opportunity Orange Scholars program. Her research in Medical Family Therapy focuses on improving access to equitable healthcare for adults with intellectual disabilities and expanding post-secondary education opportunities for these individuals at OSU. Dr. Tucker also supports OSU students pursuing careers in fields related to intellectual disabilities, including healthcare, education and social work.
  • Dr. Emily Abel, PhD is an Assistant Professor in HDFS at Oklahoma State University. She leads the Researching Equitable Sleep Together (REST) Lab, which is currently focused on understanding and addressing barriers to sleep health for autistic children and their families. The REST Lab aims to make sleep more accessible for diverse families in Oklahoma by partnering with our community to study and promote sleep together.
