Programs

Programs offered by the Center for Developmental Disabilities aim to improve the quality of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their family members. All programs are united by a common theme - fostering families and communities where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities experience true belonging.

Self-Determination Training

This program provides training for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to learn the skills needed to enhance self-awareness and self-determination. Facilitators from the OSU Center for Developmental Disabilities lead participants through a series of lessons designed to develop the skills necessary to set and achieve their personal goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is self-determination?

Self-determination is defined by acting as a causal agent in one’s life; that is, having the skills, opportunities and supports to engage in goal-directed actions. This can be enhanced through targeted instruction and opportunities to practice and use skills associated with self-determined actions (e.g., choice making, decision making, problem solving, goal setting and attainment, planning, self management, self-advocacy, self-awareness, self knowledge).

  • Why is it important to promote self-determination?

There is an abundance of research showing individuals who are more self-determined have more desirable outcomes in employment, relationships and community involvement, including individuals with significant support needs.

  • When and where do Self-Determination groups meet?
Groups meet on the OSU campus twice a week for one hour. New groups start each Fall and meet for at least 15 weeks in a row.
  • How many participants are in each group?

Groups include four to six adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and one to two trained facilitators.

  • How much does Self-Determination Training cost?

For individuals receiving home and community based waivered services through DDS or OKDRS, training and expenses can be added to the individual plan of care. For individuals not receiving waivered services, training and expenses can be paid privately.

Book Club

Since 2015, Book Club, a Next Chapter Book Club Affiliate, has been meeting on the OSU campus. Beginning September 2020, we are going virtual. Expanding to an online format provides new opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to read, learn and make friends all across Oklahoma.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who can join Book Club?

All adults with developmental disabilities are welcome to join regardless of their ability to read. Book Club is full of discussion and lots of laughter! Sometimes we read a chapter each week and other times we may only read a few paragraphs because we are so interested in talking about what is happening in the book and how it relates to our lives.

  • How many people are in each Book Club?

Each club will have a trained facilitator, OSU student co-facilitators and six book club members.

  • What does it mean that Book Club is going virtual?

Instead of meeting together on campus or at a coffee shop, virtual clubs meet via Zoom.

  • When does Book Club meet?

Clubs meet one hour each week at a designated day and time. When you register, you will be asked to rank your top three choices for day and time.

  • Does Book Club cost?

Joining Book Club is FREE! Participants must have access to the internet and a smart device with a camera (phone, tablet, desktop computer, or laptop) and download the free Zoom app. Participants may need to purchase their own book.
