Design, Housing and Merchandising

The mission of the Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising (DHM) is to be recognized leaders in Technology and Sustainable Design in partnership with industry and community. Three undergraduate options are available:  fashion (apparel) design and production, interior design and fashion merchandising. We support the tripartite mission of the university. Our objectives include:

  • Teaching: Faculty deliver industry-based curriculum.
  • Research: Faculty acquire grants and conduct cutting-edge research.
  • Extension & Engagement: Faculty provide research-based instruction and engagement activities to the public and stakeholders.

Our program graduates have careers in firms ranging from Tri-Kes Interior Finishes in Dallas, ForrestPerkins Interiors in NYC, Global Brands Product Development for Calvin Klein Footwear, Rees Associates, Wal Mart, and ownership of their own businesses.

The faculty and staff of Design, Housing and Merchandising are committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research and extension. Coursework includes application of industry based technologies such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Advanced Excel analytical skills and use of Gerber Technology software and equipment. Students are required to complete faculty supervised internships before their senior year. Recent internships have included Nordstrom’s, QVC, Anthropologie, G III Apparel, and both Commercial and Residential Interior Design firms. Our graduates are highly sought after and command strong starting salaries.
