The 2022-2025 Kamm Reimagined Experience

Focus

Hidden college student populations. Loosely defined, hidden college student populations are those who are not easily visually identifiable, do not generally have a Dr. Robert Kammvoice or space in higher education systems, and who may be motivated to remain anonymous for a multitude of reasons that may include: social stigma or judgment, desires to start fresh, fear of their stories being “too much” for the listener, and others. The question of who is a hidden population is contextually based and, thus, evolves over time. The hidden populations on which we focus typically share experiences of complex trauma and are currently identified as: those with experience in foster or other out-of-home care and/or housing insecurity (homelessness), those who are currently or previously involved with the judicial system through themselves or a parent figure, survivors of sexual violence including sex trafficking, and those who are recovering from addiction. Currently, we also include Third Culture Kids as a possible hidden population of interest. To better support these diverse populations, we must first better understand their journeys and how those may influence their experiences on our campuses.

May to August: Small Groups

Small groups are functioning as reading and discussion learning opportunities. Facilitated by a higher education practitioner, these groups are reading designated books on hidden populations and increasing their shared understanding through guided small group discussion. Small groups are in progress and registration is closed.

September 14-16

National Conference for Engaged Scholarship on Hidden Populations

Through a grant from the Spencer Foundation, in 2020, OSU established the nation’s first research conference on hidden populations. Thriving even through the impacts of COVID, this conference is led by representatives from the University of Southern California, University of Georgia, University of Texas – San Antonio, University of Illinois – Chicago, and OSU and brings together a diverse community of scholars and practitioners. The fall 2022 conference was held at the OSU campus on September 14-16.

October 2022 to February 2023: Small Groups

The May to August Small Groups will continue to convene. Registration is closed.

March 2023: Live Kamm Lecture

The Live Kamm Lecture re-emerged in March 2023. With a reimagined format, the Lecture engaged audience members in the learning experience through identities of hidden populations, engagement with a panel, and other interactive opportunities.

April 2023 – March 2025

Small groups will reconvene to imagine practical applications for hidden populations on their own campuses. These are pre-existing small groups; thus, registration is closed.
