What is elementary education?

This major is for students interested in teaching grades 1-8. Students will teach all subjects, including math, science, reading/language arts and social studies.

ExCEL Program

OSU collaborates with Stillwater Public Schools on the Excellence in Collaborative and Experiential Learning (ExCEL) Program, in which elementary education majors get an early start on their student teaching experience. The program features a 3-day a week, full-day placement in a public school classroom. Students are partnered with expert classroom teachers and return to campus for methods classes.

Randall and Carol White Reading and Mathematics Center Practicums

The Randall and Carol White Reading and Mathematics Center (RMC) provides space and resources for two on-campus tutoring courses, which are part of the preparation program for elementary education majors. The experience provides opportunities for preservice teachers to develop their technological pedagogical content knowledge in both literacy and mathematics with the support of university faculty. During the 10-week math practicum and the 11-week literacy practicum, preservice teachers assess, plan and implement weekly one-hour tutor sessions for a K-8 student. Preservice teachers become practioners with authentic, design-based opportunities to apply their understandings from previous courses and explore the complexities of teacher knowledge domains. 

Student Teaching Abroad

Students have the opportunity to take their student teaching experience abroad, either to Costa Rica or Mexico. The goal of the 15-week international internship program is to expand the personal and professional experience of students to enrich their global perspective as teachers.

Technology Integration

The college has a recommended technology purchase plan for all education majors so they experience one-to-one technology environment as learners and beginning teachers. In addition to a specialized technology course that focuses on leading models and design frameworks for planning technology infused lessons, faculty in all content method courses model innovative teaching and highlight technology that amplifies the learning experience in their specific discipline.
